Newton County Schools, in conjunction with the Newton County District Attorney’s office and A Child’s Voice Child Advocacy Center, is pleased to offer “Online Safety in 2020” for parents/guardians of school age children. On Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 6:00 p.m., Lindsey Jones, Program Director of A Child’s Voice Child Advocacy Center, and Randy McGinley, Acting District Attorney of the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, will discuss how to help keep children safe during the extended amounts of time spent online during virtual learning. The presentation will air on the Newton County School System’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/NewtonCountySchools.

"With children and teens spending much of their time digitally, there are even more opportunities for them to find themselves in unsafe situations, said Jones.

"Technology presents so many wonderful opportunities; however, the increased use of technology every day brings new risks to our children,” said McGinley. “The safety of our children must be a priority in our community. I strongly believe educating children and parents about these risks is a vital part of this effort."

“Our school safety mission has always been to ensure a safe and secure environment for all of our students,” said Amie Cumming, NCSS Director of Student and Family Support. “Currently, ‘school’ is now at home, but that does not change our responsibility to do our best to protect our students.”

Cumming added, “We are so fortunate to live in a community where our leaders share the goal of protecting our children. It has been a pleasure working with Mr. McGinley and Ms. Jones to provide our students and families with the most current online safety measures. Together they have prepared age appropriate presentations for all of our students in grades K-12 and those students will view the presentations virtually with their teachers on Friday, September 25th.”

“We encourage parents to tune in to this important presentation and participate in the question and answer session at the end if they have any questions or concerns,” said Cumming.
